Course Description
The Counter-Insurgency Orientation (COIN) Course is designed and delivered to assist trainers and leaders with the doctrine, mindset, and methodologies of counterinsurgency operations designed and delivered to assist trainers and leaders with the doctrine, mindset, and methodologies of counterinsurgency operations. The format of the Course shall be a combination of lectures by experts, question and answer, guided discussions, and tabletop exercises.
Course Aim
The aim of the course is to introduce key leaders and trainers to concepts and doctrines related to counterinsurgency operations to create a framework for an understanding of the differences between counterinsurgency and conventional warfare and introduce COIN definitions and principles.
Course Learning Objectives
By the end of the Course, Participants should be able to:
- Analyse operational environment and effects of the environment on COIN operations;
- Understand insurgency dynamics and strategies;
- Understand COIN fundamentals;
- Understand the relationship, roles and tasks of the multiple actors involved in defeating the insurgency;
- Understand COIN Intelligence Preparation of Environment (IPE) and Military Decision-Making Process (MDMP) required to integrate political, military, social, and economic programmes and actors to achieve stability and reduce insurgent influence;
- Understand unique features of leadership in COIN operations; and
- Understand strategies for coup proofing.
Course Participants
- Up to 60 participants;
- Senior Leaders from the Public Service, particularly the Defence and Security Sector.
- Participants should preferably be selected trainers and key leaders who may be deployed in COIN operations.
- Participants should be proficient in English.
Course Dates
- Friday 8 December to Monday 11 December 2023.
Award
Participants will be awarded professional certificates of successful completion at the end of the Course.
